Mount Hatis is located near the village of the same name—about 12 km from Abovyan and approximately 20 km northeast of Yerevan. Its regular conical shape and rocky slopes create a distinctive landscape in the mountain meadow zone. From beneath the frozen lava layers, the Karasunakn springs burst forth, filling the area with a sense of vitality and energy.
At the summit of the mountain lies Hatis Cave, a natural shelter often visited by climbers and adventurers. The cave is considered an underground refuge hidden deep within the heart of the mountain.

There are several theories about the origin of the mountain’s name. According to one, “Hatis” is linked to the ancient deity of nature, Attis. Another version connects the mountain to the legendary Assyrian queen Shamiram (Semiramis), and the Armenian king Ara the Beautiful, said to have met during her campaign in Armenia. On one of the slopes, the remains of an ancient fortress—locally referred to as Shamiram Fortress—are still visible today.
A night climb adds a special charm to the experience: many travelers choose to hike under the stars to witness the sunrise from the summit. The dawn is particularly mesmerizing—rays of light rise from behind Mount Azhdahak, softly illuminating the Geghama Range in hues of pink and gold. From the top, the panoramic view opens to the majestic peaks of Ararat and Aragats, offering an unforgettable travel experience.
