Bjni Fortress is located in the Kotayk region, about an hour’s drive from Yerevan, near the Hrazdan River, at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level. It was originally built by the Pahlavuni family, part of the Bagratuni dynasty, in the 9th–10th centuries. Later, Commander Vasak Pahlavuni expanded the fortress between the 10th and 11th centuries.

The fortress covers an area of about 7 hectares. Its double-layered fortifications and stone walls reach heights of 12 to 15 meters. In 1021, the fortress played a key role in defending Armenia against the Dailami mercenaries, who were defeated by Vasak Pahlavuni. During the 13th and 14th centuries, under the Zakarian family, it continued serving a defensive role until it was destroyed during Tamerlane’s invasion in 1387–1388.

Among the battlements and structural foundations, Bjni Fortress also served as a medieval educational and cultural hub. It is believed that numerous manuscripts were created or copied here between the 12th and 17th centuries. Alongside its defensive role, the fortress and its monastery complex had strategic importance for both warriors and clergy.

Today, much of the fortress lies in ruins, but walls, cisterns, and church foundations are still visible and have been partially restored.
