Museum of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin is located in the southeast wing of Echmiadzin Cathedral, inside the cathedral itself. The museum was established in 1857, making it one of the oldest church collections in Armenia. The current display hall was built in 2002 to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of Armenia adopting Christianity.

There are also fragments believed to be from Noah’s Ark, preserved since 1698.

The museum houses over 3,000 religious artifacts, including sacred relics such as the Holy Lance—the spear that pierced Christ during the crucifixion—preserved in a silver reliquary.

The collection includes liturgical treasures such as gold and pearl vestments, chalices, patriarchal crosses, cross-shaped fans, and altar curtains. You’ll also find hand-embroidered religious garments, miniature illuminated manuscripts, ancient Armenian carpets, and stone and ivory icons.

Reviewers often describe the museum as a window into Armenia’s early Christian history. Guided tours are available and especially convenient for groups. A typical visit lasts between 35 and 60 minutes.
