The Cascade Complex is situated in the heart of Yerevan and is one of the most beloved places for both locals and tourists. It is a massive staircase structure that connects the downtown area with the Monument District. Besides serving as a functional link between these two levels of the city, it also acts as an art space, a viewpoint, and a cultural hub.

The Cascade was designed by architect Jim Torosyan, and construction began in 1971 during the Soviet period. The original plan included escalators, exhibition halls, and fountains. A few levels of the Cascade still have these features, but the complex was never fully completed due to political and economic changes.

In the 2000s, the Cafesjian Family Foundation sponsored the renovation of the Cascade and brought in the large Cafesjian Art Collection.

The Cascade is made up of 572 limestone steps and is built from yellow Armenian tufa stone. It consists of several levels, and as you climb, each level offers gardens, modern sculptures, benches, and fountains. Beneath the staircase, there is an indoor escalator and a series of gallery halls.

From the top of the Cascade, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Yerevan — and on clear days, you can even see Mount Ararat.
