Most people who visit northern Armenia go to Haghpat and Sanahin – the UNESCO monasteries that appear on every itinerary. This tour goes to the places just beyond them. Three sites that almost no guided tour combines: a monastery covered floor to ceiling in rare Byzantine frescoes that survived centuries of invasion, a cave fortress carved into the cliffside that monks used to hide their manuscripts from enemy raids, and a natural cave that according to local legend connects underground to Sanahin itself. All three sit in the Debed Gorge – one of the most dramatic landscapes in Armenia – about three hours from Yerevan. The full day runs 12 to 13 hours. 1. Our first destination of the tour is Akhtala Monastery –Akhtala Monastery is a 10th-century historical site in northern Armenia, known for its rare medieval frescoes and its dramatic position above the Debed Gorge. Its story begins with a fortress called Pghindzahank, built here in the 10th century as part of the defensive system of the Tashir-Dzorageg kingdom.
In 1188, the site took on a new role when Princess Miriam of the Kyurikyan dynasty commissioned the construction of the Church of the Holy Mother of God within the fortress walls, transforming it into both a spiritual and strategic center.
2. The second stop is Zarni Parni Cave Castle. Zarni-Parni Cave is a remarkable historical site located in the Debed Canyon near Haghpat Monastery in northern Armenia. The cave once served as a secret refuge and storage place for manuscripts from the nearby monasteries during times of invasion. Carved into the rock, it reflects the ingenuity of medieval Armenian monks who used the cave as a hidden library and shelter. Today, Zarni-Parni offers visitors a fascinating look into Armenia’s history while surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of Lori Province.
3. The last stop is Mendz Er Cave – a fascinating natural landmark located in the Debed Gorge near Alaverdi in northern Armenia. The cave is known for its mysterious passages and ancient legends that connect it with the nearby Sanahin Monastery. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and forest landscapes, the site offers a unique glimpse into Armenia’s hidden natural wonders. Visiting Mendz Er is a perfect experience for travelers who enjoy exploring off-the-beaten-path places.
The Lori region attracts far fewer tourists than Yerevan or the south, which means you experience these sites without crowds. Akhtala’s frescoes – Byzantine in style, Armenian in spirit – are among the finest medieval wall paintings in the entire Caucasus, and most visitors discover them almost alone. Zarni-Parni is barely known outside Armenia, which is remarkable given how extraordinary it is. And Mendz Er rewards the curious: it takes a short hike to reach, and the drama of the cave mouth opening into the cliff above the gorge is something no photograph adequately captures. This tour is best suited for travelers who have already seen the main sites and want to go deeper – or for those who simply prefer the road less taken from the very start.

The drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours each way, through the scenic landscapes of the Lori region. The total tour day runs 12 to 13 hours including driving, so an early pickup around 8:00 AM is standard.
Both sites require short walks on uneven terrain. Zarni-Parni involves a climb along a rocky path above the Debed Gorge. Mendz Er requires a hike through forest to reach the cave entrance. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended. Neither site is suitable for visitors with serious mobility limitations.
While Haghpat and Sanahin are UNESCO-listed and well visited, Akhtala is known for something different — its interior walls are almost entirely covered with Byzantine-style frescoes that are extraordinarily well preserved. These frescoes are among the finest medieval paintings in the Caucasus and are rarely crowded, making the experience intimate and unhurried.
Local tradition holds that an underground passage once connected Mendz Er Cave to the nearby Sanahin Monastery, used by monks to escape during invasions. The cave is also associated with stories of hidden treasures and manuscript storage. Whether legend or history, the atmosphere of the cave makes the stories easy to believe.
It can be, but it works best for travelers who are comfortable with long driving days and some hiking. First-time visitors who want to see the main highlights of Armenia first may prefer to start with the Garni, Geghard or Tatev tours and save this one for a second day or a return trip.
